    • Byrd's AME Church historic marker

    • Byrd’s African Methodist Episcopal Church in Clayton was honored with a Delaware historical marker on Saturday, commemorating the history of the church which was built in 1894. The dedication service featured tributes to the church by the State Senate, presented by Sen. Bruce Ennis; the State House of Representatives, presented by Rep. Bill Carson; and the Town of Clayton, presented by Mayor Tom Horn. Delaware Public Archives Director Stephen Marz spoke at the ceremony and said the marker “will now formally document and educate the public as to the historical significance of this sacred parcel of property.” He thanked the church members, particularly Darneisha Reed and Bernard Williams, for working with the Public Archives in writing the text of the marker. Rev. Karl A. Stevens, Pastor, gave the dedication address. The dedication was part of a weekend of events the congregation sponsored in celebration of the church’s 118th anniversary.
