The Middletown Post 25 Firehawks baseball team, which includes several players from the Smyrna-Clayton area, has won four of its last five games, including the past four in a row.


The Middletown Post 25 Firehawks baseball team, which includes several players from the Smyrna-Clayton area, has won four of its last five games, including the past four in a row.

The Firehawks swept a double-header July 26 against VFW Post 3420 at Smyrna High School’s Everett Field.

A 5-run fourth inning in game one put the Firehawks ahead to stay. In the big inning, Jay Croft was safe at first after breaking his aluminum bat in half, a sight never seen by any of the players or coaches. Brad Alexander had 2 RBI for the Firehawks, while pitcher Pat Hoye struck out 8.

In game two, Post 25 scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to win 4-3. Pitcher Jay Croft struck out 8, while Ryan Gerlitz had 2 RBI and Andrew Fortner scored twice for the Firehawks.

On July 24, Post 25 edged host Stahl Post 30 by the score of 5-4, scoring all 5 runs in the top of the fifth. Jay Croft doubled to bring in 2 runs, and then Brett Cracco’s single scored 2 more for the Firehawks. Brad Alexander pitched a complete game for the win.

The Firehawks started their four-game winning streak on July 22 with a 9-7 victory against R.C. DuPont Post 18 at Smyrna High. Post 25 built a 9-3 lead after five innings and then snuffed a seventh inning rally to preserve the win. Jay Croft was the winning pitcher for Post 25, while hitting 2 doubles at the plate. David Brower doubled, singled, and had 3 RBI, while Andrew Fortner also doubled.

On July 21, Post 25 lost a home game, 12-6, to Fox Post 2. The Firehawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the second inning, but couldn’t hold on. Adam Poplos went 3-for-4 and scored twice for Post 25, while Elliot Stein hit a triple.
