A Clayton man died in a motorcycle accident on August 21 west of Dover.

State Police said a trooper who was on a routine patrol on Nault Road observed a motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles. The motorcycle sped away out of the trooper’s sight.

As the trooper continued on Nault Road, not engaged in pursuit, he saw that the motorcycle had crashed on a curve, north of Hazlettville Road. The driver was lying next to a telephone pole and the motorcycle in a cornfield.

Several witnesses told police that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and couldn’t negotiate the curve. The motorcycle ran off the edge of the road and struck a ditch, throwing the driver.

The driver, Justin D. Knieriem, 25, of Clayton, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, police said.

The road was closed for about two hours after the crash.
