The Smyrna High boys’ soccer team has been consistently good over the past few years, routinely finishing with a record of .500 or better.
But at the end of each season, a berth in the state tournament has been just out of reach.
This year, the Eagles want to change that.
Seventh-year head coach Bill Schultz said the team is looking to improve on last year’s 8-7-1 record and qualify for the 16-team tournament.
Senior Jon Storck, one of the team captains, said the state tournament is definitely the goal this year.
“The past couple years, it’s just been a couple a games, a goal here or there, and we’re in,” he said. “Hard work in practice could mean the difference.”
Smyrna’s other captains this fall will be senior Eric Davis and junior Bobby Teel.
“Jon and Eric have both taken on a leadership role as seniors, and Bobby is right there with them as a junior,” Schultz said.
Cody Malec, a junior, returns as the varsity’s starting goalie.
Although the team only has a handful of seniors this year, the Eagles welcome a good-sized group of freshman, Schultz said.
“We’re starting to see more and more players coming up, which is a benefit to the program,” he said.
Schultz is also pleased with the amount of work the players put in during the off-season.
“We’re looking forward to a great season,” he said.
The Eagles are installing a new formation this year to better suit their personnel. Schultz said the team is very strong in the midfield this year.
Heading into the fall, Davis is excited about matching up against some of the strongest teams in the Henlopen Conference.
“We always look forward to CR and Dover to see how we do,” Davis said.
“If we can compete with them, that’s how you know you can compete with most teams in the state,” added Storck.
Ryan Buchanan returns to coach Smyrna’s J.V. boys’ soccer team, and assistant Mike Osbourne rounds out the coaching staff.
