The Smyrna High field hockey team will enter the 2008 season with a new head coach and a young group of players ready to work hard and have fun.

Missie Buchanan steps in to lead the Eagles, replacing long-time head coach Sylvia Brownlee.

“I love the sport,” Buchanan said. “I have a great group of girls, and I love being around hockey.”

Heading into her first season at the helm, Buchanan’s goal for the team is not just to win, but for the team to have a fun experience in the process.

“I really want the girls to walk away from this with a love of field hockey, to have fun and win some games,” she said.

The Eagles have a handful of returning seniors on the roster, but a strong group of juniors is also coming up.

Buchanan pinpointed the Eagles’ defense as one of the team’s strengths.

Smyrna will be led this season by captains Paige Ferguson, Kellie Massey and junior Kailey Brewer.

Other returning seniors on the team are Kylie Apostolina and Nikea Draine.

Corrine Dries, a junior, returns as the varsity goalie.

“I think our strongest point is our defense,” said Massey, a senior. “We’re getting along and we’re all pushing each other to do our best.”

“One of my biggest goals it to get into the state tournament, or just have a winning season,” said Ferguson, another senior.

Draine said the team has been communicating well and working together as a team.

“We all get along,” said Apostolina. “The camaraderie is there.”

“Everyone’s really positive and looking forward to the season,” Brewer added.

That includes the head coach.

“It’s been a really good experience so far,” Buchanan said. “They’ve been really receptive to the things we’ve been doing, and the way thing have been run. I think they’re going to do a good job.”

The Eagles begin the season at with a home game on September 9 against St. Andrew’s.

The rest of Smyrna’s coaching staff is J.V. coach Rachel Onorato, assistant coach Meghan Hannebutt and volunteer Mandy Wilson.
