At the Smyrna School District Board of Education meeting on November 19 at John Bassett Moore Intermediate School, the board discussed the high school construction project and the school choice program.

School choice requests

There were three requests for school choice in the district.

One of the requests came from a student who moved out of the district and would like to finish the year in the district.

The second request was from a student whose siblings attend Smyrna schools. The student has just relocated to the Smyrna area.

The third was from a student in the district who was reassigned to a different elementary school this year and would like to go back to the school that he or she attended the year before.

Due to crowded conditions at some district schools, school choice has been closed for four years with some exceptions, including:
    • If a student is in the Smyrna School District and then the family moves out of the distict, the student is allowed to finish the year at Smyrna schools.
    • If a student has siblings in the district, the other siblings are allowed to attend Smyrna schools.
    • If a student will be moving into the district midway into the year, the student can start the year out in Smyrna.
   • If a student wants to change elementary schools within the district, an “intra-district” request may be granted, based on space availability.

Assistant Superintendent Buddy Lloyd said in intra-district cases, usually the child’s daycare or parent’s job is closer to one school, and the district tries to accommodate the request.

“If there’s room in the class, we put them there,” he said. “If the class is filled, then we don’t.”

All three requests November 19 were approved by the Board.

Construction update

Smyrna School District Superintendent Debbie Wicks said the construction is on schedule to nearly double the capacity at Smyrna High School.

“They are making good progress,” she said.

Lloyd said there are multiple things going on with construction. They are clearing the ground for the new physical plant that will have the chillers and boilers for the extension. They expect to have the physical plant completed by the spring to turn the chillers back on to cool the building.

After the new boilers are fished they can start building the new kitchen where the old boilers are now. After the kitchen is finished, construction crews can convert the old kitchen area into more cafeteria seating.

Plans for the school also include a new, larger gymnasium and a new classroom wing in the front of the building.
Next meeting on a Thursday

The next Board of Education meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 18 at 7 p.m., at Smyrna Middle School.
