A new group is up and running in the Smyrna area.

The Smyrna/Clayton Running Club held its first meeting and group run on Saturday, July 26.

The group currently meets for two group runs per week.

The new running club is the idea of Smyrna resident Turhan Jordan, who decided to organize the group after moving to the area and thinking the area could use a running group.

Jordan sent out fliers to seek members, and received more responses than he expected. The running club is currently 17 members strong, he said.

The Smyrna/Clayton Running Club is very informal and free to join, Jordan said.

The club meets to run twice a week, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings and at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings.

The group includes different levels of runners, from beginners to marathoners, Jordan said.

The club’s “default route” is to meet at the Smyrna Municipal Park and run a 3 1/2 mile loop down Duck Creek Parkway past Smyrna High School, left onto Smyrna/Clayton Boulevard, then left onto Glenwood Avenue and back to the park.

The runners also take different running routes through the area, including one that starts at Lake Como and meanders through the Lake Drive area.

The biggest advantage of running with a group is safety in numbers, considering the traffic and summer heat.

“Safety is paramount,” Jordan said.

Running with a group can also add motivation and accountability.

“When you feel like you’re supposed to be somewhere, it’s more likely you’ll go,” Jordan said.

Another fantastic byproduct of group running is that you meet friends, he added.

Jordan said the Smyrna/Clayton Running Club’s mission statement is as follows: To build a stronger community by sharing the enjoyment of running, assisting others with their goals, and creating a safer running environment throughout the Smyrna-Clayton community.

“We hope, as membership grows, to formalize it more and do some good things in the community,” he said.
