Concerts, comedy, local talent, art show, and children’s events planned, starting with blues-rock-funk band "61 North" on September 18, and "Jazz: Spanning the Decades" on September 26.



    The Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association is pleased to announce that the fall slate of concerts and events has been set at the Smyrna Opera House. The Opera House is located at 7 W. South Street, at the corner of Main Street.
    Here is the schedule:
    September 18 – “61 North,” a high-energy band blending new and old with a sound that fuses blues, rock, jazz, funk, and progressive music. This past February, “61 North” won “Best Rock Song” for Loaded Gun on 93.7 WSTW’s Homey Awards, 7:30 p.m., $12.
    September 26 – “Jazz: Spanning the Decades,” featuring Tom and Sandy Doyle performing standards by Billie Holiday, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Duke Ellington, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Chet Atkins, Django Reinhardt as well as some originals, 7:30 p.m., $15.
    October 3 – Stand-up comedian Gordon Douglas providing an evening of clean comedy, 7:30 p.m., $15 (cash bar).
    October 10 – “An Evening with Paul Kranz,” singer-songwriter who features some of his favorite artists (Dan Fogelberg, Jackson Browne, Billy Joel, Jim Croce) with a few originals, 7:30 p.m., $12.
    October 29 – Free Movie Night featuring Casper (Rated PG) at 7 p.m., and The Shining (Rated R) at 9 p.m. Free but reservations are required!
    October 30 – “Brandywine Harps,” 17 harpists dressed in Halloween garb will perform a variety of Celtic tunes, 7:30 p.m., $15.
    October 31 – “Halloween Happenings.” Kids will enjoy pumpkin painting, bobbing for apples, mask making and storytelling with Jackie McCabe, 10 a.m. $8 per child (adults free).
    November 6 & 7 – “Harvest Moon 2009.” Enjoy country music from the 1950s to the present day featuring local artists, 7:30 p.m., $12.
    November 7 – Family Matinée: “The Three Bears,” featuring Tuckers’ Tales Puppet Theatre, 1 p.m., $5.
    November 20 – Smyrna Opera House Art Show opening reception, 6-8 p.m. Show runs through December 13. Call Opera House for Gallery hours.
    November 21 – “Tribute to the Music of Simon & Garfunkel,” featuring A.J. Swearingen & Jonathan Beedle. With a quiet stage and an acoustic guitar, A.J. and Jonathan recreate the memories of the songs of Simon & Garfunkel, 7:30 p.m., $17.
    December 4 & 5 – “Sounds of the Season.” Holiday show that will include musical selections and readings featuring local performers, 7:30 p.m., $12.
    December 12 – “Santa’s Workshop,” featuring a variety of “hands on” arts activities for children, 10 a.m., $8 per child (adults free).
    December 12 – “The Chesapeake Brass Band.” Enjoy the holiday season with the sounds of brass. 7:30 p.m., $15.

Volunteers welcome
    The Smyrna Opera House is also always looking for new volunteers from the community to help with our various events. The volunteer corps holds monthly meetings at the Opera House the first Wednesday of every month at 1 p.m.
    An added bonus is that as a volunteer for a particular show, you get to see the performance for free! As a non-profit organization the Smyrna Opera House depends on the help of its loyal and energetic volunteers.
