A Smyrna man was flown by State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital after his car overturned and caught fire Sunday night on Sunnyside Road.


A Smyrna man was flown by State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital after his car overturned and caught fire Sunday night, August 23, on Sunnyside Road.

The crash occurred at 9:51 p.m., in the 2400 block of Sunnyside Road near Hillyard Road and Wheatley's Pond Road (Route 300), according to State Police Corporal Jaime Dorsey-Sterner.

Eric Sartin, 18, of Smyrna, was driving west on Sunnyside Road when his car went off the north side of the road and struck a mailbox. The vehicle overturned three times, and Sartin was thrown out of the car. Then the car caught fire.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, and Sartin was taken by State Police helicopter to Christiana Hospital and treated for multiple injuries, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
