Delaware State Police are warning the public of an ongoing telephone scam targeting the state’s senior citizens.

There recently has been a rash of phone calls to elderly persons from someone claiming they are with Publisher’s Clearinghouse, said police spokesman Senior Cpl. Gary Fournier. These callers are requesting the person verify their Social Security number as well as date of birth to claim a large sum of money. To receive their winning prize, the individuals are asked to transfer money from their account to that of the caller. Once the transaction is made, the scammer not only receives the money, but has enough information to commit identity theft.

Fournier said that under no circumstance should anyone give out their Social Security number or any vital information such as bank account numbers.

Anyone receiving such a call should tell the person you are not giving your information to them and call the police.
