This spring season will be a fresh start for Smyrna High baseball.
The Eagles are following the leadership of a new head coach, Kenny Brown, along with assistant coach Gary Everage Sr.
“We’re bringing in a new attitude in terms of discipline,” said Brown, who wants to the team to represent Smyrna and Smyrna High School in a good way.
That discipline extends to the small details. Coach Brown expects his players to tuck in their shirts and wear their hats properly on the field.
“We’re more of a serious team this year – about wanting to win and playing our best,” said senior captain Tyler Davis, who is entering his fourth season with the team.
The Smyrna High baseball team has struggled in recent years, but the Eagles are optimistic about turning things around.
“We’ve all got good attitudes coming in this season,” Davis said. “We’re swinging our bats real good.”
“We’d like to go .500,” he added. “That’s the minimum goal we have this year.”
The Eagles’ pitching staff will be led this year will be sophomore Dylan Voss.
“He’s a big guy,” said coach Brown. “His fast ball’s coming a little harder.”
Rounding out the team’s top three pitchers are freshman Dustin Warren and junior Derek Knight.
Brown said the team will focus on playing small ball and good defense this season. The team hit well in a scrimmage last week against St. Michaels (Md.), he said.
“We’re going to get it done the right way, and we’re going to win some ball games,” Brown said.
Brown, who was an assistant coach for the team last year, is a former collegiate player at the University of Miami who went on to play in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization from 1981-83.
