This spring, the Smyrna High varsity softball team will look very much like it did a year ago.

The Eagles lose only two starters from last year’s squad, which finished with a 14-7 record and outscored its opponents by a combined score of 102-26.

“We’ve got a seasoned group of girls,” said Smyrna assistant coach Nicki Shirey.

In last year’s state tournament, eventual state champion Milford needed an extra inning to get past Smyrna in the first round.

Now, with most of the team back and armed with an additional year of experience, the Eagles have lofty expectations for the new season.

“I think we’re going to go far with this team,” said Smyrna High senior Kayla Carrow.

Smyrna pitcher Chelsea Botsch, now a junior, will be back on the mound with two years of varsity starting experience already under her belt.

In recent seasons, the Eagles have been known for their tight defense, and they expect that to continue.

Another strength for the Eagles is the quality of their utility players.

“We can throw anybody in at any time,” said Shirey.

In addition to playing varsity softball, many of the Smyrna High softball players also compete on travel teams.

“They’re year-round players pretty much,” said Shirey.

The Eagles have fun in practice, but they’re also serious about the task at hand.

“Our goal is to make it to the championship,” Carrow said. “We’ve got a great team this year.”
