A woman walking her dog on Route 40 in Bear was hit by a car last night, March 24, at about 8:15 p.m. The woman was hospitalized. The dog was killed.


A woman walking her dog along Route 40 in Bear was hit by a car last night, March 24, at about 8:15 p.m. The woman was hospitalized. The dog was killed.

The accident happened on westbound Route 40, east of Route 72, according to Delaware State Police.

Joseph Gorman, 44, of Bear was driving west on Route 40 approaching Route 72.

Patricia Nichols, 53, of Bear was walking her dog, trying to cross Route 40 in the area of the Fox Run Shopping Center. Police said she walked directly into the path of the car.

Gorman was unable to avoid Nichols and her dog.

Nichols was taken to Christiana Hospital where she was treated for serious, but non-life threatening injuries; however, her dog died as the result of the injuries it sustained.

Gorman was not injured.

Traffic in the area was delayed for about an hour while this incident was investigated.

Nichols was charged with a pedestrian violation, police said.
