The Smyrna High baseball team came up two runs short in its season opener at Lake Forest on March 23.

The Spartans took a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but the Eagles came back and tied the game with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Lake Forest regained a one-run advantage in the bottom of the fifth, and extended the lead to 6-3 with a pair of runs in the sixth.

Smyrna scored one in the seventh, but fell by a 6-4 final.

The Eagles came up with seven hits to Lake Forest’s six, but committed three errors to while the Spartans had only one.

Gary Everage had four hits for Smyrna, while Derek Knight hit a solo homerun.

The Eagles’ home game against Woodbridge, originally scheduled for March 26, was postponed to Tuesday, April 6 at 3 p.m.

Smyrna had a home game against Delmar set for Monday, March 29. The Eagles also have road game against Sussex Central on Wednesday, March 31.
