  • Bayhealth Medical Center has announced plans to expand services at the Bayhealth Smyrna Clayton Medical Services Campus, including the addition of a new 24-hour Emergency Department. The facility is located on the corner of Carter Road and Wheatley’s Pond Road (Rt. 300).
    “Our tradition of caring extends more than 30 years for the Smyrna and Clayton communities. Today, we are reaffirming and strengthening our commitment to serving these communities,” said Bayhealth President & CEO Terry Murphy, FACHE, in a press release on Aug. 19.
    Murphy notes that Bayhealth’s commitment began in the late 1970s with the opening of an outpatient lab testing facility at St. Polycarp Roman Catholic Church in Smyrna.
    In January 1992, Bayhealth opened Smyrna Clayton Medical Services Campus on North Carter Road, which was later expanded in 2008 with the $10-million construction of 30,000 additional square feet of medical office space and state-of-the-art diagnostic services. The latest expansion plan is based on research which indicates a significant need for additional services and physicians to serve northern Kent County and southern New Castle County.
    According to Murphy, Bayhealth seeks to expand its commitment to the community with the addition of the following services in the existing building on North Carter Road:
    • A freestanding Emergency Department which would provide 24-hour emergency services, slated for opening in 2012;
    • Digital Mammography;
    • Physical Therapy;
    • SleepCare Center;
    • Additional primary care and specialty physicians.
    “One clear need is emergency services. Once the regulatory review process and renovations are complete, Smyrna and Clayton residents suffering an emergency medical condition will be assured that emergency room doctors are only moments away to take care of them,” said CEO Murphy.
    Requiring regulatory approval, Bayhealth has filed a Notice of Intent to file a Certificate of Public Review application with the Delaware Bureau of Health Planning and Resources Management to open the Emergency Department. The application and review process will take approximately nine months.
    The Bayhealth Smyrna Clayton Medical Services Campus is a 40,000 square foot facility which already provides the latest diagnostic tools including open MRI, CT, Ultrasound, General X-ray and Lab services. The facility is also home to Family Medicine of Smyrna, Cardiology Consultants, Asthma Allergy Care of Delaware, Central Delaware Gastroenterology, Kent Pulmonary Associates and Delaware Cardiovascular Associates.
