  • The developer for Huntington Mills in Clayton has filed for bankruptcy, and residents are wondering what that will mean for the future of the neighborhood.
The 200-lot development off of Wheatley’s Pond Road still contains 32 empty lots, and those lots haven’t been maintained, said Town Foreman Jeff Hurlock.
At Monday night’s council meeting, Hurlock announced that town workers would try to cut down the high grass that has sprung up in the vacant lots.
“I can’t guarantee it’ll all be cleared up, but we’re going to go in there and try to do something,” he said.
Huntington Mills resident Sterling Enos Sr. said he was glad to hear that news. “Those lots look wicked,” he said.
After the meeting, Huntington Mills resident Cordell Carr summed up his concerns about the situation.
“This guy declared bankruptcy. What happens to the people in the development?” he asked.
Hurlock said the top coat for the streets in Huntington Mills hasn’t been put down.
Verizon antennas proposed for water tower
In other news, the town received a letter from a consultant on behalf of Verizon Wireless, who is interested in leasing space on Clayton’s water tower on Main Street to install 12 antennas to improve service in the town.
The consultant requested that the issue be added to the agenda for the next council meeting.
According to the letter, Verizon typically leases for $1,500 per month.
    Planning and Zoning meeting
Clayton’s Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22 to consider the request for a deviation from the town’s open space requirement for the Ovations development planned off of Clayton-Greenspring Road.
