It never gets old.
Citizens’ Hose Company won its 30th Governor’s Cup as the best appearing company with music at the 2010 Delaware Volunteer Firefighter’s Association parade on Saturday in Dover.
It was also the sixth year in a row that Smyrna’s volunteer fire company has claimed the cup.
“It never gets old going down there, marching in front of the crowd and then bringing it back to town,” said Fire Chief Tate Coulbourne.
“All the past chiefs have worked so hard over the years, and we’re just carrying on the tradition that started in 1960, when they won it for the first time.”
When the company members return to Smyrna with the trophy held high and sirens and horns blaring, it’s a special time for everyone involved.
“It’s an adrenaline rush,” Coulbourne said. “The feeling is indescribable.”
It’s also rewarding to hear the comments and see the thumbs up from community members upon their return, he said.
Leading up to the parade, it’s not only the firefighters, but also their wives, girlfriends and children who put in long hours of preparation.
“It’s a family affair,” Coulbourne said. “Everybody’s a part of it.”
