Smyrna High’s cross country runners raced against teams from Cape Henlopen, Sussex Tech, Polytech, Seaford and Stephen Decatur at the annual Ron Powell Invitational on Sept. 18 at St. Joseph’s in Clayton.


Smyrna High’s cross country runners raced against teams from Cape Henlopen, Sussex Tech, Polytech, Seaford and Stephen Decatur at the annual Ron Powell Invitational on Sept. 18 at St. Joseph’s in Clayton.

In the girls varsity “A” race, Smyrna’s top runner was Tori Vickers, who finished sixth with a time of 22:05. She was followed by Emilee Virdin, who finished eighth at 22:58.

In the boys varsity “A” race, Ben Wattay led the Eagles with a fourth place finish and a time of 19:33. Andre French came in seventh with a time of 20:13.

In the team standings, the Smyrna girls finished fourth out of six teams, while the Smyrna boys finished fifth.

In meets, the Smyrna High girls have raced to a 2-0 start. The Eagles won 21-35 at Lake Forest on Sept. 15 and topped Polytech 25-32 at home on Sept. 22. Smyrna’s Maura Hossler was the first-place finisher at both meets with times of 22:12 and 22:16, respectively.

The Smyrna boys are 0-2 after a narrow 29-28 loss at Lake and a 34-23 setback against Polytech.

On Oct. 16, the Smyrna High cross country team will participate in a 100-mile relay fundraiser to benefit the team. Runners will take turns running to complete the challenge in 10 hours. The team is seeking sponsors for the event.
