Smyrna High’s varsity football team mounted a fourth quarter comeback in Friday’s road game at Sussex Central, but the Knights held on for a 28-20 win over the visiting Eagles.

After falling behind 14-0, Smyrna got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when Carlton Nash ran into the end zone to make it a 14-6 game at halftime.

The Knights extended their lead to 21-6 in the third quarter, but Smyrna continued to battle.

The Eagles scored a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter of play, but Sussex Central also added a score and held on for a 28-20 win.

In the fourth, Smyrna’s Mark Wright scored on a touchdown run, and also threw a touchdown pass to Malik Golson. Wright connected with Mike Brown on a successful 2-point conversion play.

On Friday, the 1-5 Eagles will host Sussex Tech. Kick off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
