A New Castle County Police officer has been injured after his police cruiser was hit by a pickup truck in Bear.

The officer, who was not named by police, was responding to an Oct. 19 shooting in the Village of Kent when his cruiser was struck broadside by the truck while he was turning onto Porter Road from Route 40, police said.

He was knocked unconscious and had to be cut out of the cruiser, police said. The officer was transported to Christiana Hospital by helicopter, where he is being treated for a head injury, police said. His status is stable, according to police.

The driver of the pickup truck, who was not named by police, was not injured and refused medical treatment at the crash site, police said.

An investigation into the accident is underway.
