The accident occurred on northbound Rt. 1 in the Bear area at about 3:15 p.m.
State Police said a 17-year-old male from Bear was driving a 1996 Mitsubishi 3000G in the middle lane of northbound Rt. 1 at a high rate of speed. As the he tried to make a right hand lane change to avoid a slower moving vehicle in front of him, he lost control of the car which began to spin in a clockwise direction. The car traveled off of the east edge of the road, hit a metal guardrail, and overturned, coming to rest partially on top of the guardrail.
The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and was thrown from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
A 16-year-old female passenger from Newark was also pronounced dead at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, police said.
Rt. 1 northbound was closed for about three-and-a-half hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
