The Smyrna High varsity football team won for the second week in a row on Friday night, but it didn’t require a dramatic comeback this time around.
In their final home game of the season, the Eagles trounced Delcastle, 34-0.
Delcastle recovered an onside kick on the game’s opening kickoff, but that might have been the high point of the night for the Cougars.
Smyrna’s defense forced a turnover on downs, and then the Eagles offense marched down the field.
Cameron Nash’s 23-yard touchdown run gave Smyrna the lead a little over four minutes into the game.
On the next drive, Delcastle had a long touchdown run negated by a penalty.
After that, the Cougars had to punt it back to the Eagles, who went on to score again when quarterback Mark Wright connected with Demetrius Williams on a 24-yard touchdown pass.
Near the end of the first quarter, Delcastle completed a long pass play downfield, but Smyrna’s Mike Brown stripped the ball from the receiver to spoil another opportunity for the Cougars.
Smyrna’s 14-0 lead remained intact when the Eagles started a drive with about 2:30 left in the half. Smyrna wasn’t content with that lead, though.
On the final play of the half, Wright tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Cameron Nash, who slid to the ground to catch the pass in the end zone with no time showing on the clock.
Smyrna led 21-0 at the half, and continued to control the game in the second half.
Delcastle mounted a long drive at one point in the third quarter, but Zach Boyles recovered a fumble at the 2-yard line to end the threat.
Later, Carlos Velez blocked a Delcastle punt to put the Eagles in prime scoring position. On the first play of the possession, Wright tossed the ball to Mike Brown, who took it into the end zone for a 14-yard touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, Wright threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game. This time, Wright found Keith Tucker in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown.
Delcastle’s final drive of the night ended when Justin Coleman intercepted a pass attempt.
With the victory, Smyrna improved to 3-5 on the season.
The Eagles have now won three of their last four games, a fact that should give them confidence heading into their final two games of the season at Caesar Rodney and at Cape Henlopen.
“Winning solves a lot,” said head coach Clay Lloyd after the game. “It’s human nature that when things start going your way, you start to believe a little more.”
The Eagles completed their home slate with a 3-2 record on their home field.
