  • This Saturday, Jan. 21, the Friends of Folk coffeehouse is brewing something local: A night with Smyrna’s Justin McNatt Trio. Here’s what to expect.
    1 Local talent
Friends of Folk’s monthly coffeehouses bring performers from all over, and this time they’re sticking close to home with the trio that includes Justin McNatt, Glen Derle and Derek White. The original rock/alternative band from Smyrna has been making the rounds of the region’s cities, playing in Washington, D.C., and Philly. In May, the group will compete in the Music-A-Live! Philly Battle of the Bands at The Legendary Dobbs on South Street. The contest is a benefit, and will help raise money for struggling public schools to buy musical instruments.
    2 Two for one
Stolen Child, a semifinalist in the Friends of Folk’s most recent Folk Hero Contest, will open for the Justin McNatt Trio on Saturday.
    3 First timers
If you’ve never been to a Friends of Folk coffeehouse, expect a unique experience. The Wesley College Chapel is intimate, so you’ll be able to chat with other music lovers, and probably the band. It’s also a family friendly gig, so no alcohol will be served, although you can get other hot and cold drinks and sweet treats.
    WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND
The organization strives to not only bring great music to the public, but also to help keep music in schools by collecting used instruments for Delaware Charitable Music Inc. Coffeehouse attendees are also encouraged to bring nonperishable food and toiletries for the Food Bank of Delaware.
