The day before thousands race into the ocean to show their support for Special Olympics Delaware, contestants from TLC's "Cake Boss: Next Great Baker" will go head-to-head at the Polar Bear Cake-Off in Rehoboth.
This Sunday, thousands will brave the icy ocean to raise money for Special Olympics Delaware during the annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge. The fundraiser has blossomed into a weekend of events, including a showdown between eight of TLC’s “Cake Boss: Next Great Baker” contestants at the Polar Bear Cake-Off.
Now in its second year, the Cake-Off has seen a boom in popularity.
“We are excited that the event was such a huge success last year, so much so that many of the contestants from the first season of ‘The Next Great Baker’ wanted to return and are bringing a couple of contestants from season two with them,” said Carrie Staker-Jones, Special Olympics Delaware Board of Directors member.
Joining Dana Herbert, winner of 2010 “Cake Boss: Next Great Baker,” and owner of Desserts by Dana in New Castle, are 2010 competitors Jay Qualls, Greggy Soriano, Johanna Lyons, Pamela Ahn and Kendra Jordan. From the 2011 season are Carmelo Oquendo and Jasmine Frank.
Hardcore fans can head to the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center and stay all day to watch what happens to bakers under fire. Or they can check out the day’s other events and stop in for the late-afternoon judging. Either way, it’s free.
Spectators can make their opinions known by buying a $1 donation to Special Olympics Delaware and voting for their favorite cake. Judges will take the public’s vote into consideration while making their decision.
“This event truly is family-friendly, and the perfect way to give back to the community and support such a worthy cause,” said Ann Grunert, executive director of Special Olympics Delaware.
