  • Virginia B. Wootten, “Ginny,” of Smyrna, DE died on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the Silver Lake Center in Dover, DE at the age of 93.
    Mrs. Wootten was born March 12, 1918 in Clayton, DE. She was a graduate of John Bassett Moore High School in 1936, and the Women’s College, University of Delaware in 1940 with a B.S. Degree in Education.
    She taught in the Delaware school system until her marriage to G. Edward Wootten in 1942, whom at the time, was stationed at the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. as a Navy Intelligence Officer.
    They lived in D.C. until he was sent to the South Pacific in 1944. She returned to Delaware and to her teaching career after accompanying her husband to the West Coast and spending several months with her brother in Seattle, WA.
    She left the teaching profession permanently in 1970 when she went into the retail and real estate business with her husband.
    Mrs. Wootten was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Smyrna, where she served as Jr. Warden on the vestry. She was also very active in the Alter Guild and Craft Class, where she served as Treasurer in both organizations. She was a member of the Smyrna-Clayton Heritage Association, and past member of the 20th Century Club.
    After the death of her husband, Mrs. Wootten volunteered two days a week in the Endoscopy Unit at Bayhealth Medical Center in Dover, which she thoroughly enjoyed and was the recipient of the Volunteer of the Quarter Award in 2000. She also volunteered in the Read Aloud Program.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Alvan (Tom) Burris, Ruth Raughley, Preston Burris Sr., Naomi Lofland, and their respective spouses; and infant daughter in August of 1958; her husband, Ed in December of 1996; and her daughter, Suzanne (Susie) in March of 2000.
    She is survived by one granddaughter, Kelly H. Overton; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE, where friends may call at 10 a.m.
    Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna.
