  • Larry W. Alfree Sr. of Blackbird passed away Sunday, March 18, 2012 in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was 59.
Born on January 16, 1953 in Dover, DE, he was the son of the late Donald and Mabel (McClain) Alfree.
Larry graduated in 1971 from Middletown High School. As a newly high school graduate, Larry found employment at Blue Ridge Textiles in Middletown. When the company left town, he then tenured 14 years of employment at Arnold Graphic Industries in Smyrna as a Data Card Machine Operator. After the Smyrna branch closed in 1987, he then established employment for 16 years at VPI Mirrex, Corp., the Delaware City Rigid PVC Films Company.
In 2003, the Delaware City division closed and at that time, Larry attended Polytech Adult Education where he proudly majored in a Mechanical Skills Technology program. After training for the HVAC field, he acquired a delivery driver position with Sid Harvey Industries, Inc. in Dover, but shortly thereafter became disabled.
Larry had a passion for making things work.
Mechanically inclined, a trait he inherited from his father, he enjoyed working on small engines such as lawn mowers. Friends, neighbors and family would often take something broken to Larry and he would make it work again. One of his greatest characteristics was his patience and that was something he learned from his mother.
His real obsession was for old cars and tractors, and he liked to accumulate both.  He had dreams of restoring the ones he owned. NASCAR and football were his two favorite sports, although he enjoyed watching all sports. You could find him fixated on the TV on Sunday afternoons, summer time was for NASCAR and winter time was for the EAGLES. Larry was a diehard Rusty Wallace fan. Anxiously awaiting NASCAR to arrive in Delaware each year, he so enjoyed going to the races at Dover Downs.
Though he spent much time squirrel and rabbit hunting when he was younger, the thrill of deer hunting was Larry’s favorite hobby. His proudest moment was when his son bagged his first buck. He also fancied trains and had a small collection of them as well.
Larry enjoyed all holidays, but truly enjoyed Christmas. A child at heart, he loved everything about Christmas, from hanging the lights to putting up the tree. He enjoyed getting together for holiday dinners and barbeques in the summer.
He is preceded in death by his parents who passed away in 2006 and 2007. He is survived by his son, Larry W. Alfree II at home; a step-daughter, Stacey Dixon of Harrington; two grandchildren, Madison and Jaxson Bishop of Harrington; a brother, Donald Alfree Jr. and wife Bonnie of Townsend; sisters, Diane L. Alphin and husband Jay of Blackbird, Debbie S. Emerson and husband Jimmy of Middletown, and Donna L. Alfree and fiance William Stackhouse of Blackbird; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
