  • The Smyrna High softball team has taken their first two games of the seasons with close wins against Cape Henlopen and Indian River.
    The Eagles came from behind to win Tuesday night 7-6 against Indian River. After falling behind 3-2, the Eagles scored 4 runs in the 5th inning to take a 6-3 lead over the Indians.
    The rally started in the bottom of the fifth when the Eagles' catcher Morgan Seymour doubled in outfielder Emily Carrow to tie the game 3-3. Second baseman Jen Gray echoed with a RBI, followed by a two-run homerum by shortstop Paige Morris, giving Smyrna a 6-3 lead.
    The Indians went on to tie the game 6-6 in the sixth inning off a sacrifice fly to right field by Alyssa Hudson that scored Zhane Hall.
    For the Eagles, the game wasn't quite over as Morris drove in Hayley Smith in the bottom of the 7th for the 7-6 win.
    Morris went 3-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBI's, including her two-run homerun. Gray, Seymour and Emily Smith contributed one RBI each.
    Freshman pitcher Sydney Botsch (2-0) won her second game of the season.
    The Eagles opened their season Friday with a 6-5 win at Cape Henlopen. Botsch was the winning pitcher while senior third baseman Jordan Whitley reached in every at-bat.
    Smyrna's next game is tomorrow, March 29 at home against Woodbridge High School. The game starts at 4:15 p.m.
