Roberta Thomas Mafko, age 97, of Smyrna, Del., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, April 11, 2012.
Ms. Mafko attended Strayer Business College in Philadelphia, and began her secretarial career at the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co. She later joined the DuPont Company, retiring from there as an executive secretary.
She sang in the Blue Rock Chorus, and was involved in fashion and modeling. She raised toy poodles; one of them became a champion. She played the piano and electronic organ. After she retired, she became an accomplished watercolorist. One of her greatest joys was hosting dinner parties for family and friends. She lived for many years in North Wilmington. She also owned homes alternately in Avalon, N.J., and Naples and Marco Island, Fla., of which family and friends have fond vacation memories.
She is survived by her son, Robert Steele of North Carolina; her daughter, Carol Child of Smyrna, Del., five grandchildren, and many great- and great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, April 19 at 11 a.m., at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, Del., where friends may call at 10:30 a.m. A time of fellowship and light refreshments will be offered from 12-12:30 p.m., followed by burial in Fernwood Cemetery in Lansdowne, Pa.
