  • Every year at the Smyrna/Clayton Little Lass Softball opening day ceremony one player moving up from the 12 and under division is chosen as the Mary Jo Jenner Award winner. The chosen player is one who exerts good sportsmanship, plays with heart, cheers on her teammates even when she’s not playing, displays an all-around good attitude and more.
On Saturday, Madelynne Rodriguez – who plays for 17 and under team Edward Jones – was named as the recipient of the 2012 Mary Jo Jenner Award. Madelynne took a few moments following the opening ceremony to talk softball and the award.
Q How did you start playing softball?
A When I was little, I played a bunch of other sports but didn’t really like them. My mom – we have a lot of baseball in our family history – her cousin played softball and she went to college so my mom thought it might be a good idea to start me in softball. Where I grew up, they didn’t have a 10 and under so I actually had to start playing with older girls and I was so scared, but I think it was best for me. It was really kind of cool to play with them; I was able to look up to them, kind of have a good role model for me.
Q What do you like about playing for the Little Lass program?
A I do competitive softball so I like it here because I’m able to have fun and it’s not so much competition, but it’s good to try new things and just learn new things. I’m able to play with my friends. It’s really fun down here. And it’s a nice environment. There’s no stress or anything like that.
Q How do you feel about winning the Mary Jo Jenner Award?
A I was nervous. When I came up here, I was just like “Oh my gosh.” But I’m really happy that I won it and it’s really an honor to be given this award in the name of such a wonderful person who played here.
