The Smyrna High tennis teams are headed for the state tournament this weekend. Leading the way for the Eagles on the girls side are the second doubles duo of Gabby Pope and Katie Morgan who are the No. 1 seed.
Morgan and Pope are 18-0 this year, and are on the heals of their Henlopen Conference Tennis tournament second doubles championship last weekend. The two have a bye in the first round but will face the second doubles team from Middletown in the second round on Saturday at Appoquinimink High School.
The state tournament starts Saturday morning with the first two rounds; the players are put into locations based on position played.
Also seeded in the tournament for the girls team is second singles player Rachel Blair, seeded sixth. Blair placed second at last weekend's conference tournament. Blair also has a bye in the first round and will play the winner of the William Penn/Archmere match in the second round. Blair will play at St. Andrew's School.
As for the rest of the team, first singles player Sarah Koehler plays Sarah Schroeder from Glasgow in the first round. They will play at the University of Delaware. Third singles player Katherine Clark will play Ursuline's Bethany McKelvey in the first round; they will play at St. Andrew's.
Smyrna's first doubles duo of Courtney Walley and Louisa Rusch face off against Newark's first doubles team in the first round; they will play at Middletown High School.
Boys tennis team
First singles Tom Clark will play A.I.'s David Kim in the first round at Dover High School. Second singles Tugrabek Usul will face off against Salesianum's Eric Neff in the first round at Wesley College. Third singles player Ben Twenge will play St. Thomas More's Anthony Caruso in the first round at CR.
First doubles duo of Ryan Kaczorowski and Austin Flowers will face off against Concord's first doubles team in the first round at Smyrna High School. Second doubles team Josh Allison and Cody Cummings will play St. Mark's second doubles team in the first round at Smyrna.
Moving on in the tournament
If a player makes it through the first round, they will play in the Monday, May 21 quarterfinal matches. The semi-finals are on Tuesday, May 22 while the finals will be on Wednesday, May 23 at the UD field house.
