  • The Smyrna High boys and girls tennis teams played the first few rounds of the state tennis tournament this weekend.
    Advancing to Tuesday’s semi-finals was second doubles duo Gabby Pope and Katie Morgan. The two moved on after defeating Tatnall’s second doubles team in three sets in Monday’s quarterfinals. Pope and Katie were set to play CR’s Aisha Hallman and Stephanie Rogers on Tuesday. If Smyrna wins, second doubles will play in the state finals on Wednesday.
    With the top seed in the state at second doubles, Pope and Morgan had a bye in the first round and defeated their Middletown opponents 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.
    Also playing in the quarterfinals on Monday was second singles player Rachel Blair. Blair lost to St. Thomas More’s Maria Sadusky 6-2, 6-1. Seeded sixth in the tournament at second singles, Blair had a bye in the first round and defeated her Archmere opponent Victoria Kaloudis 6-1, 6-0 in the second round.
    As for the rest of the Lady Eagles, first singles player Sarah Koehler lost in the first round to Glasgow’s Sarah Schroeder 6-4, 6-2 while third singles player Katherine Clark lost to Ursuline’s Bethany McKelvey 7-5, 6-0.
    First doubles team Courtney Walley and Louisa Rusch won by default in the first round, as their Newark opponents didn’t show. They lost in the second round to St. Andrew’s Lucy Slack and Nolan Wein 6-1, 6-2.
    Boys results
    The boys tennis team didn’t fare quite as well in the state tournament.
    First singles player Tom Clark defeated his A.I. duPont opponent David Kim 6-3, 6-7 (10-7) in the first round but fell to Dover’s Vybav Hiraesave 6-0, 6-0 in the second round.
    Second singles player Tugrabek Usul lost in the first round 6-0, 6-0 to Salesianum’s Eric Neff. Third singles player Ben Twenge lost to St. Thomas More’s Anthony Caruso 6-3, 6-0 in the first round.
    First doubles Ryan Kaczorowski and Austin Flowers lost to Concord 6-2, 6-2. The second doubles duo of Josh Allison and Cody Cummings won in the first round, defeating St. Marks 6-1, 6-0 but lost in three sets against Mt. Pleasant’s Meet Patel and Parth Patel 6-2, 0-6, 3-6 in round two.
