  • Smyrna High School seniors Gabby Pope and Katie Morgan have had quite the run at second doubles this year for the girls tennis team.
The duo went 15-0 in the regular season, won the Henlopen Conference Tournament second doubles title, and were on a 21-match win streak heading into the DIAA Tennis Championship Finals Wednesday at the University of Delaware.
Could they spread the magic from this season just a little bit further for a state championship and a record of 22-0? Pope and Morgan met their match against Tower Hill's second doubles team, losing 6-3, 6-2. But they still ended their season second in the state and with a record of 21-1, and head coach Courtney Markiewicz doesn't think that's bad at all.
"I'm thrilled...proud," she said. "I never expected it. I thought about it during the season that they had the potential of getting to the finals. It was a well earned surprise."
Moreover, Pope and Morgan's second place finish in the state tournament shows that Smyrna has come a long way in girls tennis. "This shows anyone can win at any given time."
While Pope said being second best in the state is exciting, it still a bit disappointing. "It's bittersweet," she said. "I think we've surprised everyone that we've come this far. I don't think anyone expected us to get this far."
What's been a highlight of the season for Pope? Beating the CR second doubles team four times - twice in the season, for the Henlopen Conference Tournament second doubles championship, and in the semi-finals of the state tournament.
As for Morgan, finishing in second was sad but still good. "We played our hearts out. We talked and didn't give up on each other. I'm happy we've made it this far."
With her Smyrna tennis career now over, Morgan said she'll miss Coach Markiewicz and having Pope as her partner.
