While the June 18 Smyrna Town Council meeting may have focused on the proposed police station as reported in last week’s Sun-Times, there were plenty of other items discussed as well. Here are some other highlights from the meeting.
Town finances looking good
Town Manager Dave Hugg reported to council regarding town finances including the status of the town’s transfer taxes through May.
“I’m pleased to report for two months in a row the transfer taxes are running substantially above where they were last year and much more closely in line to where they’ve been the last couple of years,” Hugg said.
Hugg believes this is an indication of increased business activity in town and he hopes to see things continue in this direction.
2011 audit report approved
The 2011 audit report was presented by Pam Baker, an audit partner with Barbacane, Thornton & Company.
Baker said the town had a clean audit and that the town has the chance to win their third national award for their audit.
Plus, it was noted that the town actually had a surplus of roughly $142,000 last year.
Mayor Pat Stombaugh was happy with the results of the audit.
“It’s always good to have good news, especially when it comes to money,” Stombaugh said.
Council approved the audit report.
Council approves hiring of cop
After some lengthy discussion, town council approved a recommendation from the Personnel Committee to hire an additional police officer.
DeFeo explained the police department is approved for 23 officers but they are down four. The town never hired the 23rd officer, one officer is in the hospital, one officer is fulfilling his military service obligation, and another officer is out injured.
“So we’re running down right now,” DeFeo said. “We are down four [officers] but I’d like to start with [hiring] one.”
Moreover, they’ll be down another two officers once school starts back up in the fall as two work as school resource officers.
It takes a few months to get an officer hired and in the system, so DeFeo recommended giving approval now in order to get an officer started by September or October.
There were some questions as far as when the officers would return and how the town could afford hiring another officer.
DeFeo said it is unknown when the officer in the military would return, one injured officer is actually on light duty, but the other officer will be out for an extended period of time.
“We’re trying to avert any type of crisis that’s going to occur in staffing officers toward the end of the year,” DeFeo said. “And again next year we’re going to have to find how we’re going to budget for that officer. But it’s the prudent thing to do; public safety comes first.”
Belmont Hall annexed into town
Council approved to set the zoning at Belmont Hall to institutional and recreational, as well as adopted a resolution to annex Belmont Hall into town limits.
Hugg explained these were the concluding steps in the annexation process of Belmont Hall, a state-owned property. There was an annexation election in which there was one vote in favor of the annexation cast by a representative of the state.
“This is an annexation that many of us have been working on for some time to bring this facility into the town,” Hugg said.
