Groome Mears Jr., age 87, of Lewes, DE, passed away on Monday, July 30, 2012 at Beebe Medical Center. He was born in Chester, PA on July 17, 1925, the son of the late Groome Mears Sr. and Katharine Durborrow Mears. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Patricia Carter Mears, in 1981 and a sister, Virginia Mears.
Mr. Mears was a graduate of Middletown High School and the Eckels College of Embalming. Following his schooling, he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Corpsman. After his service to his country he returned to begin work in the funeral profession with the Mealey and Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes of Wilmington. In 1947 he opened his own funeral home in Middletown, DE which he owned until retirement in 1992.
During his residency in Middletown, he was a member of the Bethesda United Methodist Church where he served as choir director for 40 years. He was a member of the Rotary; former member of the School Board; and he also served as the director of the former Middletown Volunteer Fireman’s Band.
After his retirement, he and his wife Rosann D’Addurno Mears moved to the Lewes area where he became very active with the Lewes Presbyterian Church, serving as choir director for nine years, retiring in 2011, and he was director of the Lewes Men's Chorus. He was also a Licensed Funeral Director on Staff with Parsell Funeral Homes since 1998. Many enjoyable times were also spent with his friends in the "Meet Loaf Club."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Groome Mears III and wife Jill and John Carter Mears and wife Eileen, all of Townsend, DE; three daughters: Gretchen Lasswell of Crystal Beach, MD, Katharine Sweetman and husband Doug and Martha C. Williams and husband Bill, all of Townsend, DE; a step-daughter, Holly D’Addurno and husband Cliff Layman of Raleigh, NC; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 10 a.m., at the Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012 from 6-8 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE.
Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m., on Friday August 3, 2012 at Forest Cemetery, Middletown, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Lewes Presbyterian Church Music Program, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE.
