  • Residents in the Smyrna-Clayton area now have another option for lunch and dinner as Jake’s Wayback Burgers is open for business at their new location in Smyrna on Glenwood Avenue.
Bringing the famous burger restaurant to town are Becky and Mark Hollett, of Sudlersville, Md. The restaurant is the first-time venture for the husband and wife. Mark worked in construction management for 28 years while Becky worked in the bakery at Byler’s and then as a manager of video stores. They decided to open their own restaurant last year and decided to do so through a franchise.
The two decided to bring Jake’s to Smyrna because of the growing population. The restaurant opened in June.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of options as far as food places go,” Mark said. “So we figured we’d give the Smyrna-Clayton area another food option for lunches and dinners other than normal fast food places.”
For people unaware of the Jake’s brand, they’re not a fast food restaurant; what sets them apart is their food, which is always cooked fresh right in front of the customer.
The menu consists of hand-made hamburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, hot dogs, chicken, fries, onion rings, salads, and specialty sandwiches like the turkey burger.
On top of regular Jake’s menu items are their Burgers of the Month (BOMs) and Milkshakes of the Month (MOMs). Each month people suggest their own concoctions and vote. The August BOM is a Rodeo Burger with onion rings, American cheese, and BBQ sauce. Peach is the milkshake for August. They’ve gotten some pretty crazy suggestions for BOMs, Becky said, including the Carolina Jake that featured mustard, coleslaw, and chili.
“You wouldn’t believe how many we sold,” she said.
The most popular items on the menu so far are the Jake Cheeseburger, which has two patties. The most popular milkshakes are a toss up between strawberry and orange cream.
Thus far, people are glad to see another option for eating out. The restaurant, which has a ‘50s theme, is a great way for a family outing, Becky said.
“We just hope we get all the support from the community. Everybody says that they’re glad we’re here,” she said.
    Burger Eatin’ Contest
Jake’s Wayback Burgers will be hosting the company’s 5th Annual Chowdown Showdown on Saturday, Aug. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Smyrna location. The showdown is a burger-eating contest, where the person to eat the Triple Triple – a 9-patty hamburger – is deemed the winner. This year’s winner will get an iPad2 and a chance at $1,000.
Page 2 of 2 - Mark said the event is a corporate contest but they thought it’d be a fun thing to do in the community.
“Everybody seems to be pretty excited about it,” Mark said. “They many not want to be in the contest but they want to see other people try to eat all the burger.”
To sign up for the contest, stop into Jake’s Wayback Burgers on Glenwood Avenue, next to Rent-a-Center, or go to facebook.com/waybackburgers.
