  • For the second year in a row the Delaware Senior Olympics will be hosting their bike race in Smyrna.
The race includes a 20K and a 40K, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will start and end on Main Street close to Lake Como. Awards will be given out at Lake Como.
The race is open to bicyclists 40 years and over. There will be five-year age groups and two divisions based on skill and racing experience.
    EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
    1. While last year’s race was a non-qualifying event, this time around the race is a qualifier for next year’s Nation Senior Games Association National Championships. Bicyclists 50 and over who race in Division I, and finish in the top four their age group qualify for the championship.
    2. Make it a family affair as there will be a children’s race as well. Children age’s five to 10 can sign up for the 200-meter race on Main Street on Saturday. Sign ups will be on Hamilton Lane. The race is expected to begin around 10:30 a.m. There will be two-year age groups with the age 9-10 bracket going first. Children must wear helmets.
    3. There will be a vendor square adjacent to the Farmer’s Market, which is on South Market Street Plaza in front of town hall. Sponsor Peanut Butter & Company will have samples of eight peanut butters. There will be goodie bags filled with items from some of the sponsors including Pro Gold Lubricants and Hammer Nutrition.
    WHY SHOULD YOU GO?
Not only is it hoped that the bike race will be a yearly event in Smyrna, town officials are welcoming the chance to show off the town to bicyclists from Delaware and the surrounding areas.
“We hope it’ll bring people into town and to see the town that otherwise may not visit,” said Councilwoman Joanne Masten. “We always like the chance to showcase the town.”
