  • The Smyrna field hockey team starts the new season next week and while the team is featuring a lot of new faces, they are still hoping to have a good season.
With a record of 9-6 last year, the team narrowly missed the state tournament on a technicality. Team captain Morgan Jewell said the team was really happy because they thought they were state tourney bound with the 16th seed.
“An upstate team won their conference championship and conference winners make it so we didn’t,” she said.
For coach of four years Fran Strosser, she hopes to keep the team positive and focused with a plan of seeing how their play progresses over the season. Having a lot of newcomers could prove to be challenging, but Strosser said the good thing is the girls are excited and work hard.
Senior Alyssa Lattomus, who’s also a team captain, said the young team is developing their skills and she believes the team will do well this season.
Jewell added that yes the team is young but she thinks everyone’s really good and will grow into really good players.
For Lattomus, being a senior on such a young team provides a chance for the upperclassmen to be roles models: “We’re role models for the young girls to look up to and it’s a good feeling.”
As for goals for the season Lattomus, Jewell and the team’s third captain – Shannon Strosser – pretty much agree on the same thing: a winning season and state tournament bid.
Coach Strosser’s goal is to see the team have a better record than last year but wants the team to at least finish at .500.
“Maybe we can take the team a little further this year,” Strosser said.
