The Smyrna High School volleyball team held their annual Dig Pink match during their Sept. 18 home opener against Milford.

The Eagles defeated Milford 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-13) for their second win of the season, with two more wins last week against Delmar and Red Lion respectively, the Lady Eagles are now 4-2 on the season.

However the Sept. 18 match was more than just about the win because it was the 5th annual Dig Pink match to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation, a non-profit that raises money for breast cancer research.

JV coach Marc Deisem said the goal this year is to raise $1,000 and they've raised about $700 so far.

"We're doing things a little differently this year," Deisem said. "We're also donating a portion to the American Cancer Society and 10 percent of what's donated will go to the Lori Robinson Memorial Scholarship."

Lori Robinson was a Smyrna High School librarian who passed away from cancer last year.

To raise the money, the volleyball team goes out into the community asking for donations. The team raises money for the month of October.

Team gets off to a good start

The varsity volleyball team is off to a 5-2 start with the first two weeks of the season in the bag. While the first week featured losses to Sussex Tech and Delaware Military Academy, the Eagles went 3-0 last week with wins against Milford, Delmar and Red Lion. Plus, they beat Sussex Central 3-0 Tuesday night.

IHead coach Danny Wandless said Tuesday's victory against Sussex Central was a big win for the Eagles.

"So far I feel the team has performed very well," he said.

Prior to the start of the season, Wandless said the team needed to improve on communication on the court, and in being proactive rather than reactive. Thus far he's seen improvements in both: "But we can and will be better in both as the season moves forward."

An area Wandless feels the Eagles are doing well is competing and pushing one another in practices.

It's been a busy few weeks for the team but they'll get a break as they'll next match isn't until Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Dover. They'll be home again next Thursday, Oct. 4 against St. Thomas More at 5 p.m.
