The Clayton man who police said implied he had a gun while trying to rob the Valero Shore Stop on Main Street was locked up on lack of bail.

Middletown Police said that David Donnell, 42, entered the Shore Stop on East Main Street at 7:25 p.m. Sept. 23 and told the clerk that he had a handgun.

Donnell, who resides in the 1100 block of Hollets Corner Road in Clayton, then demanded money from the 18-year-old female clerk, police said. The clerk refused to comply and Donnell fled on foot.

Police canvassed the area with negative results, but were able to develop Donnell as a suspect in the robbery.

At around 8 a.m. Sept. 24 police took Donnell into custody without incident in Dover and charged with attempted robbery.
Donnell was committed to the Howard Young Correction Facility on lack of $15,000 bail.
