  • Smyrna High School Associate Principal Stacy Cook has been appointed to take the place of Principal Anthony Soligo who will be retiring Nov. 30. The Smyrna Board of Education approved the appointment at the Sept. 19 board meeting, effective Nov. 26.
Cook has served as associate principal at Smyrna High for nearly four years. Before that, she was a science teacher for 11 years, including three at Caesar Rodney High School and eight at Smyrna High.
Her first job after college was as a chemist at DuPont Merck Pharmaceuticals in Wilmington where she worked on research and safety testing of treatments for patients with HIV.
A Smyrna High School graduate, she was the valedictorian of the class of 1999 and went on to earn her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Swarthmore College, her master's degree in education from the University of Delaware, and her administration certificate from Wilmington College.
Cook and her husband of 19 years, Shawn, have one daughter, Kenley, age 11.
She is the daughter of Wes and Pat Conley and the daughter-in-law of Allen and Judy Cook.
The Sun-Times asked Cook a few questions about her soon-to-be new position:
Q What are you looking forward to as principal?
A Continuing the proud traditions of Smyrna High School, and helping to seek out new opportunities for our staff and students.
Q What are two of the biggest challenges?
A The increasing non-instructional workload imposed on our administrators and teachers as a result of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top.
Q How does it feel to be appointed as the principal of your alma mater?
A I'm very proud! I love the Smyrna School District and Smyrna High School! It is my honor to be able to serve both in this new capacity.
