  • The Sussex Tech Ravens swooped in and snatched away Smyrna High's Homecoming football game Friday night, scoring a touchdown with less than a minute to play for a 7-3 victory.
In a defensive struggle, a first quarter field goal by Andrew Gilbert gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead that nearly held up the entire game.
The Eagles stopped a Ravens' threat in the third quarter by recovering a fumble near the goal line.
Then late in the fourth quarter, the Ravens forced a fumble near midfield and started their game-winning drive. With 3:22 left, a Sussex Tech 14-yard touchdown run was called back because of a holding penalty. Several plays later, on fourth-and-one from the five-yard line, a Sussex Tech runner surged ahead for two yards and the first down. Then the Ravens scored on the next play and the extra point was good for the 7-3 lead.
With seconds left, Smyrna took two chances on long passes, but Sussex Tech intercepted the final one to end the game.
The Eagles, now 3-3, will travel to Caesar Rodney next Friday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
