  • OBITUARY: Clare P. Shirey, 89

  • Clare P. Shirey of Smyrna, Delaware, passed away Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at Westminster Village Health Center in Dover, DE. She was 89.
    Mrs. Shirey was born August 12, 1923 in Ellwood City, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Petrak.
    Clare proudly served her country as Lieutenant and Registered Nurse in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II.
    She retired as Director of Nursing for the Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill in Smyrna after 25 years of service.
    She enjoyed traveling and raising her family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
    Mrs. Shirey was a devoted member of St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church in Smyrna.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Harry R. Shirey; and seven siblings.
    Mrs. Shirey is survived by three sons, David R. Shirey (Lynn) of New London, PA, Craig A. Shirey (Becki) of Cameron, MT and H. Ray Shirey, Jr. (Maureen) of Downingtown, PA; a daughter, Patricia Pierson (Wayne) of Clayton; five grandchildren; Aaron (Nicki), Gina, Christopher (Stacy), Stacy (Jason), and Carolyn; three great-granddaughters; Meghan, Madison, and Marli; a great-grandson, Jake; and five siblings.
    A viewing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna.
    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, located at 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna.
    Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
    In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19904 or to St. Polycarp's Roman Catholic Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, DE 19977.
