  • WHY WE'VE REPORED IT The Smyrna Middle School wrestling team entered the 2011-2012 season with a streak at stake: nine undefeated seasons and 99 straight wins. On Dec. 12, 2011 the team won it's 100th straight match, a streak that dates back to the 2001-2002 season.
When the Eagles closed out their season on Feb. 2, Smyrna defeated Fifer 50-30 to cap their 10th straight undefeated season and 109th straight win.
Head Coach Steve Stewart retired prior to the start of the 2012-2013 season, leaving the team in the hands of volunteer coach and former Smyrna wrestler Matt Bivins. The team has won its first four matches of the season, bringing the streak to 113 straight wins.
WHY IT MATTERS The team's streak of 10 consecutive undefeated seasons is Stewart's proudest accomplishment in his 41 years of coaching. The streak is something no other middle school program in the state has accomplished.
WHAT'S NEXT The Eagles have had some pretty convincing wins early on in the new season, including Thursday's 79-9 win over Beacon Middle School.
Bivins said the team is practicing well and wrestling well in the matches, but the winter break will do the wrestlers some good.
"I think we'll be rested," Bivins said. "It's been a long month, school- and wrestling-wise. It'll be good for them. When we get back we'll start to get in the grind of things. Dover Central is our first match back, but we'll have a few practice days to prepare for it."
