A Smyrna High School teacher was arrested Monday, Jan. 7 and charged with having sex with a student multiple times.
The arrest was made after Smyrna Police concluded an investigation into allegations that a male Smyrna High School teacher had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old female student, according to Smyrna Police Lt. Norman Wood.
Donovan J. Garvin, 37, of Widener Lane, Smyrna, was taken into custody at his residence without incident and taken to the Smyrna Police Department.
"The investigation began on Friday after information on a cell phone was reported to school administrators, who contacted the school resource officer," Wood said.
Wood said the relationship between the student and Garvin began during the student's freshman year, which was last school year.
Smyrna School District Superintendent Debbie Wicks said Wednesday night that Garvin is on unpaid administrative leave. He was a math teacher with the school district for one year. Garvin didn't have any extra duties and wasn't a coach, Wicks said.
He was charged with 10 counts of first degree sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust, and one count of sexual solicitation of a child under the age of 18 to engage in a prohibited act, said Lt. Wood.
Garvin was presented at Justice of the Peace Court 2 by videophone and committed to the James T. Vaughn Sr. Correctional Center in default of a $780,000 secured bond to await another court appearance.
