  • A portion of Carter Road will be closed for 10 months as part of the Delaware Department of Transportation's rehabilitation project.
Carter Road between Route 300/Wheatley's Pond Road and Deak Drive in Smyrna will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21 until 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, pending weather.
A possible detour for drivers is to continue on Sunnyside Road past Carter Road, turn right onto Hillyard Road and turn right on Route 300/Wheatley's Pond Road.
The rehabilitation work will include widening of Carter Road to two 11-foot lanes; two five-foot shoulders; installation of curbs, sidewalks on both sides of the roadway for pedestrians; drainage system for storm water; relocation of utility poles; street lighting; and a new signal at the Sunnyside Road intersection. The anticipated project completion date is mid-November 2013, pending weather.
Message boards will be set up notifying motorists of the upcoming road closure.
Access to area residents will be maintained at all times during construction and emergencies.
The contractor for these improvements is A-Del Construction Company, of Newark.
