  • Joe Baione Jazz Trio brings smooth sounds to Smyrna Opera House

  • While you don't have to look far to find singer-songwriters or garage bands, the same can't be said about vibraphonists.

Usually overshadowed by the ever-popular guitar, the Smyrna Opera House will spotlight the wonders of the vibraphone with a show by The Joe Baione Jazz Trio on Saturday.
Led by namesake Joe Baione, of Dover, the Trio will perform standard and original jazz compositions that focus on the Latin and African influences that Baione has studied over the past 15 years. One of the original pieces includes a driving Latin rock piece, "The Journey," inspired by the adventure of a musician's highs and lows as they climb the ladder in the music business.
Other standards in the show will include the lovely ballad "Alone Together" and Milt Jackson's famed tune "Bags' Groove."
Baione — a professional jazz vibraphonist who earned his Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of Maryland — will literally drum up excitement with his skilled hands. As witnessed in a number of The Joe Baione Jazz Trio's performances on YouTube, it's undoubtedly clear that he's a force to be reckoned when armed with mallets.
    Impressive resumé
Having entertained crowds for nearly two decades, Baione's resume boasts of performances at venues like The Kimmel Center and Zanzibar Blue in Philadelphia, the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay, Jamaica and the Temecula Valley Jazz Festival in California. In the past few years, he has had the pleasure of opening for Michael Bolton, Monty Alexander, and Joey DeFrancesco.
His credits will soon include a new recording produced by the legendary Todd Barkan. Barkan has worked with several respected artists including Grover Washington, Jr., Tommy Flanagan and Eddie Henderson.
The album will feature Baione's sextet of diverse musicians hailing from Tokyo, Puerto Rico, Delaware, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and New York City. The release date of the project hasn't been announced.
