  • Smyrna traffic stop leads to DUI, firearm arrest

  • Smyrna Police stopped a vehicle in the area of Route 13 and Smyrna Leipsic Road Jan. 18 at 8:30 p.m. for suspicion of the driver being intoxicated.
    After making contact with the driver, the officer observed a shotgun in the vehicle and had the driver exit for sobriety tests, police said. After failing the tests, the driver was transported to the Smyrna Police Department for further testing.
    Walter Teat, 51, of Smyrna, was charged with possession of a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol, no proof of insurance and improper lane change.
    Teat was later presented at Justice of the Peace Court No. 7 via videophone and released on a $1,525 unsecured bond.
