The fire department responded at 7:35 a.m. to the southbound lane of Route 1 just south of exit 114 for a three-vehicle accident. Citizens' Hose Company Public Information Office Eugene Tucker said when the firefighters arrived to the accident one person was suffering from neck and back injuries.
"Due to the numerous accidents in the area, firefighters had to wait for an ambulance to arrive from Dover's Prime Car Ambulance to transport the injured party to Bayhealth in Dover," Tucker said.
The firefighters had to wait nearly an hour before the ambulance could get to the accident, Tucker said.
Citizens' Hose Company responded to three additional accidents on South DuPont Boulevard and on Route 1.
There were minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident on Route 13 and South Carter Road. There was property damage as a result of a two-vehicle accident at Route 13 and Hickory Ridge Road. A call to Twin Willows Road was unfounded.
Tucker said traffic on South DuPont Boulevard from Cheswold to Smyrna was nearly at a standstill in the southbound lanes because of roadway conditions due to the snow.
Lt. Jason Hansen was the officer in charge of the accident on Route 1 and exit 114, and a total of four units responded to the accidents with 36 personnel in service for about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
