  • The Smyrna High School JV boys basketball team finished their season Tuesday night with a hard fought 46-42 victory over Sussex Tech.
The win gives the Eagles a final record of 19-1 for the season.
Coach Dontay Black said the game remained close the entire time. Smyrna started out down 10-5 in the first quarter but came back with a 20-17 lead at the half, and then led 32-27 going into the fourth quarter. Both teams battled all the way to the end.
With 1 minute remaining in the game, the Eagles led 42-40 when Kobe Morris had a key turnover in which Black said Sussex Tech stole the ball and tied the game 42-42. With 40 seconds left on the clock, the Eagles attempted to hold for one more shot. Black said Boaz Menard turned the ball over leading to a Sussex Tech fast break to take the lead with 15 seconds left, but Donte Ritchie ran his opponent down and blocked the Sussex Tech layup.
Tech received the ball back but then turned the ball over with 11 seconds left. The Eagles ran back up the floor, Ritchie found a wide open Vincent Jubilee underneath the basket for the win. Menard capped the game with two foul shots with 5 seconds left to close out the game 46-42.
Smyrna was led by Jubilee with 8 points and 18 rebounds, Jameir Sudler with 8 points, and Greg Duggans with 7 points.
Black said the Eagles put forth another great performance from every player that touched the floor and he was proud of his players.
