The Smyrna Lady Eagles defeated Seaford 70-57 Saturday night to capture the elusive Henlopen Conference basketball title.

There were plenty of happy faces on the home side after Smyrna's 70-57 victory over Seaford Saturday night after the Henlopen Conference Championship game, played at the Lady Eagles' home court, The Coliseum.

"This was a great victory, but we're not done yet, we're not satisfied. We're looking to get to the Bob (Bob Carpenter Center) next week," said Smyrna coach Rachel Woodall. She was referring to the DIAA girls' basketball finals held at the University of Delaware next weekend.

Smyrna's victory broke the Lady Blue Jays long, 13-game winning streak, but both teams will participate in the tournament.

Seaford led throughout the first half, and much of the game, but Smyrna would not go quietly into the cold night.

Seniors Brionna Johnson and junior Taylor Price led a fourth quarter comeback drive that led to a successful conclusion and the elusive conference championship.

Seaford got off to a smooth start and maintained a small lead through most of the first 16 minutes. However, the Eagles stayed close and wound up leading 30-29 at the break. Price already had 17 points at the half and Johnson added 7 more.

The momentum remained primarily with the Blue Jays throughout the third quarter, but despite their best efforts could not pull away from the persistent Eagles. That set up the dramatic and exciting fourth quarter.

"They were a tough team. We beat them earlier in the season, but we had to work hard tonight," said Johnson, who had 22 points on the night. Price finished with 23 and Alexus Stroud has 13 for the Lady Eagles.

Smyrna is now 19-2 on the season, heading into the tournament. They will play the winner of the Sussex Tech-Padua game at home on Friday night.

The Blue Jays were led in scoring by La'Shyra Williams with 20 points and Tynetta Washington had 13 points.

Seaford also has a home game on Friday against the winner of the Tatnall-Glasgow first round game.
